Green Flag!!!!

We are DELIGHTED to announce that our school has achieved our very first Green Flag!! We are truly delighted to receive such an accolade in such a short space of time and it’s all down to the hard work put in by all in our school community, but in particular all the girls and boys who always follow our Green Schools slogan and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!!
On Monday 21st of May teachers Aileen and Tasha and two members of our Green Schools Committee will go to Dublin to collect our Green Flag! We can’t wait to see it!! We will be holding a Green Flag ceremony in the school very soon, when we will be raising our Green Flag for the very first time!! A big thank you to Green school committee members, teachers Aileen, Tasha and Mary and to all parents who helped out on our big Spring clean day!! Most of all a HUGE thank you to all the girls and boys of Wexford ET who are our real green superheroes!!!

Extra, extra read all about it!!! We have had a very busy couple of months here at Wexford ETNS! Some highlights included a visit from the famous author and artist and teachers’ favourite, Don Conroy, and our School of Excellence Award which we received after many months of hard work! Take a look at some of the pictures below!!

School of Excellence Awards 2012

In September of this year our school decided to undertake the School of Excellence programme which is run by Wexford Education Centre in conjunction with Waterford Institute of Technology. The focus of this year’s programme was ‘The Writing Process’. Teachers attended special workshops and seminars with other schools to share ideas and skills.

We then took some of these wonderful ideas back to our classrooms to put them into practice in really fun, practical ways. Some of the wonderful work done by the children included report-writing, narrative writing and instructional writing. These writing genre were explored through the media of cookery, project-work and baking.
On 27th April all of our work paid off as we were awarded our first School of Excellence Award. Teachers attended a special ceremony in Waterford Institute of Technology. Our School of Excellence Award will be proudly displayed in our school reception. Let’s hope it’s our first of many such accolades!!! Well done to all the girls and boys on their wonderful work

Draw with Don!!

Students and teachers alike were delighted to welcome famous author and artist Don Conroy to our school earlier this month. Don is fondly remembered by teachers and lots of mums and dads too for his ‘Draw with Don’ slot on ‘The Den’ many moons ago (we won’t count how many!!).
Firstly, Don visited Selina’s class and delighted all with his wonderful storytelling and illustrations. Don had us on the edge of our seats and we loved his funny drawings!! He then visited Aileen and Tasha’s classes for more wonderful storytelling and drawing fun! You can see some to Don’s pictures displayed in our hallway on the flipboard. Don was even kind enough to draw some pictures for all of us to bring home! A true legend, Don still inspires young minds even after all these years!!! Take a look at some pictures below!

Day of Action- a BIG success

We had a wonderful turnout for our Green Schools Day of Action on Friday last, in spite of the poor weather!! Thank you to all those who lended a helping hand on the day, the children are delighted with our new school garden!

It was wonderful to see everyone working together on what was a really fun project! Pupils also got involved by holding a litter pick in the school grounds and carpark! We are really looking forward to our Green Schools inspection so we can show off our beautiful school!! A BIG ‘Thank You’ to all involved!!

Great news everyone! Our Green Schools evaluation is to take place in late February. We have all been very busy reducing reusing and recycling at school and we hope that our hard work will pay off when we are awarded our first green flag!!

You can help out too by volunteering for our Green Schools Day of Action on Friday 10th Feb. We would really appreciate if you could all lend a hand to get our school grounds looking spic and span for our inspection!!! So bring a shovel and a smile and let’s get green!!!

Happy New Year everyone!! Let’s make 2012 our best ever year!!! We are very busy this month at Wexford ETNS. It’s Human Rights month and we are learning all about our rights and responsibilities as children. Fiona O’Shea from Amnesty International will be coming to speak to us on Monday the 23rd of January.

Following this Tasha’s class will be taking a trip to the offices of the Ombudsman for Children in Dublin. We hope to establish our first Pupil’s Council also this month! Each student will be allowed to vote for a representative for their class in our democratic process.

We really have that holiday feeling here at Wexford ETNS! Our choir serenaded the staff yesterday afternoon with some beautiful festive sounds!!

Don’t forget our Cake and Craft Sale takes place in the school on Wednesday 21st December from 1.30-3.30pm! Remember all proceeds will go towards our school library so come along to support this great cause!

Well done and a huge thank you to everyone who braved the icy cold weather on Saturday to take part in carol singing on Main Street!

School closes this coming Thursday 22nd December at 12 noon and will re-open on Monday 9th January for our second term! We would like to take wish you and yours all the very best for the holiday season and we look forward to seeing you all in 2012!!!

Have you got the Xmas-Factor?!!!

Some festive carol singing will take place this coming Saturday 19th December from 2pm-5pm at AIB Bank, North Main Street. Please come along to support our school and sing a few tunes!! This event is being organised by our Parents’ Association and follows on from the very succesful table quiz which was held in the Thomas Moore Tavern last week! A big thank you to all who have helped organise these events!

Please come along and bring a woolly/santa hat and a big smile!!! It does not matter if you can’t sing a note- it’s all about having fun!!

Crafty Kids!!!

Our seasonal craft fair takes place in the school on Wednesday 21st of December from 1.30-3.30pm. All are welcome so please come along and help us to raise some money for some new books for our library! All of our crafts have been handmade in school and many are made from recycled materials and include saltdough decorations, handmade giftwrap and cards, reindeer food, advent calendars, angels and lanterns.

We are also holding a bake sale on the same morning! We would really appreciate if each family could bake or buy some treats to sell at our cakesale! All proceeds will go to our school and will help us to fill our library with fabulous books! Thank you for your support!!

Road Safety Month at Wexford ET

It’s Road Safety month at Wexford ETNS! We are learning all about using our roads safely. We have been learning the Safe Cross Code, making great posters and the Community Garda even paid us a visit!!

Our message this month is ‘BE SAFE, BE SEEN’ and the children in Aileen’s class are partaking in the ‘High-Glo Silver’ campaign which promotes the use of high visibility gear. All the girls and boys will each receive a high visibility vest and armband to wear on these dark evenings when out cycling or walking. Parents have also received a copy of the ‘Seatbelt Safety’ DVD from the Road Safety Authority- if you have not received a copy please call to the office for your complimentary DVD!
